ENDERTORIAL



Just wanted to post a quick note that we’re trying a new format here at HRD; the original, single-long-post-every-morning is the same format we’ve run since the site’s very first day, and I’m told that it becomes unwieldy on portable devices — so it’s time to modernize with the times.

HRD should still read the same for everyone who simply visits the Front Page, and the single-post will still be there for people who like it that way; you’ll just have to give it an extra click is all.

In addition, readers not on portable devices should see improvements too: not the least of which is that, by posting individual Challenge entries, the site becomes hugely more searchable, both from on board the Pillar Of Awesome as well as from the wilds of outer space known as the Internets.

Anyway, it’s all a bit of extra work from our end, but we thought it’d be a useful improvement. So, give us some feedback and let us know what you think. Do you like it? Hate it? Don’t care, just shut up Ender and help me get that Weekly Challenge? Send us some emails and let us know!

Not much to say: Load up any power-weapon Firefight Arcade game and you should be able to blast your way to this Challenge in a single match. Even if you fall short of the mark, though, it’s a simple matter to just fire up another, or wrap things up in Score Attack.

(We’d recommend against Score Attack for starters, though; Gruntpocalypse seems like an obvious choice here, but though it offers exactly the number of Grunts you need — 120 — they have a tendancy to blow up themselves, or each other, or both, meaning you’d fall short and need a second Round anyway.)

Earn 40 kills with automatic weapons in Multiplayer Matchmaking.

Automatic weapons include not just your trusty Assault Rifle, but also Covie Needlers and Plasma Rifles and Repeaters. (The Needle Rifle has an autofire, but it’s classified as a Precision Weapon.) So, expect to see Gametypes and Loadouts featuring these weapons throughout the day.

A few quick tips, which you already probably know since we’ve said them before, but anyway:

    The Assault Rifle: AKA El Spam-o.

  • If you find yourself in AR showdowns with you consistently on the corpse end of the gunfight, you’re probably just holding down the trigger. Unlike the BR from Halo 3, the AR in Reach actually behaves the way a gun should when you fight with it: keep your trigger down and your shots will start to fly in all sorts of wild directions. The key to the weapon is short, controlled bursts. Pump your trigger at a steady pace and the reticule will keep resetting; it’ll take some practice to find the sweet spot, but once you get the hang of it you’ll do it without even noticing.
  • Lead with your Grenades to soften up enemies, since you’ll get no Challenge credit for emptying your clip to bring down their Shields, only to finish them with a wasted ‘nade burst.
  • Needler Supercombines will register Challenge points as well, so look for enemies who have strayed from cover and ambush them for a quick kill. Keep an eye not on your opponent but rather on your aiming reticule; the targeting circle remains far more easy to keep track of than an enemy attempting to evade.
  • Swap out your secondary weapon for another auto-shooter whenever you can; thus, even if your first clip fails to close the deal, you can switch weapons to finish the kill rather than give an enemy time to escape or retaliate while you reload.
  • Likewise, remove double-melees from your close-quarter lexicon; flash his Shields with a melee strike, then dodge backward and fire to keep him from finishing you with a double-melee of his own.

Longtime reader V Translanka adds:

“If you really want to remove double-melees from your lexicon, then Sprint is your best bud, because a Sprinted melee comes with an enhanced knockback bonus that’s perfect for the armor pop-and-fire method.”

Earn 5 kills with precision weapons in a Multiplayer Matchmaking game.

Wow, again? It’s not that we don’t love the Star Wars quotes, but changing the quote doesn’t really make it a new Challenge. (And, oh yeah, they were talking about a lightsabre, — same mistake as yesterday.)

Anyway, all sorts of options here, since “Precision Weapon” includes Snipers, Needle Rifles, and the trusty standard-issue DMR. (Even though your Magnum is a headshot weapon, it’s actually classified as a Sidearm; the Focus Rifle is a precision weapon too, but they’re fewer and further between in Multiplayer.)

Both SWAT and Team Snipers seem obvious choices, though just about any gametype with a DMR start will qualify. In the playlists that don’t emphasize one-hit kills — Team Slayer, Rumble Pit, for example — keep in mind that you only need your DMR for the final shot: soften up (but don’t kill) enemies with grenades before you open fire, take down shields with an overcharged Plasma Pistol and follow melees with a headshot rather than a second melee. Remember also that you only need use a precision weapon to score a kill, not necessarily a headshot — so feel free to Supercombine with a Needle Rifle, it’ll uptick your Challenge meter just the same.

Likewise, you obviously want to avoid most instant-kill weapons, such as the Sword, Hammer, Shotgun, Rockets and Plasma Grenades, though that doesn’t mean you can’t use them to your advantage: most of these tempt other players just by their very presence, and they often concentrate more on scoring the weapon than fighting or defending. Like every other creature in the galaxy, Halo players can’t resist the lure of a shiny object.

So, even if you’ve got the chance to swap out for one yourself, consider using it instead to set a trap, waiting for players who have focused more on the power weapon than the dangers of their immediate environment (such as you). Or, even better, snag it and then drop it again in an absurdly open space, where other players are sure to see it but have little in the way of cover or defense. Unlike most other types of camping, you won’t have to wait very long for someone to show up.

Hey! We haven’t seen this Challenge for…um, three days. C’mon, Bungie, get it together.

Anyway, only one Skull on this time, so let’s take a look: Thunderstorm upgrades enemies to the next difficulty class; but, at the end of the day, you’re going to be Sprinting past most of them anyway. Here’s the vid of the speed run through Nightfall, just in case you’re new, and you can always click on the standing link at the top of the page for a more detailed description.


WEEKLY CHALLENGE


LONG NIGHT OF SOLACE: LASO

Tip Of The Week

As with most of the LASO Challenges, we have our standard warning: There’s really no other way to say this, but you’re probably never going to do this alone. (If you can handle a Legendary level solo without dying, though, you won’t need any advice from here.) And, while it’s not quite Mythic difficulty — SLASO is solo-only, and includes the Blind Skull — it’s pretty damn close.

So, while it’s true that the game amps up the difficulty for more players in Co-op mode, you’ll want the three more guns at your side; otherwise, it’ll just be a very long day of level Reloads.

OK then. The mission’s much too long for a detailed walkthrough, so instead keep in mind some strategies that help on Legendary difficulty no matter which part of the campaign:

  1. On Legendary, Reach becomes an almost entirely different game; rather than the run-and-gun, blaze-of-glory style you enjoyed on Normal, Legendary relies much more on strategy than sheer skill. Your kung fu may be strong, but you won’t be able to ninja your way out of a Legendary plasma shitstorm.
  2. Since the Iron Skull will force the entire team back to a Checkpoint after a single player death, you’ll also need to play even more defensively— stealthy when possible, and get-the-fuck-out when necessary. If you think you’ve just done something that would make an awesome kick-ass clip for your File Share, you’re probably not doing this right.
  3. In almost every situation, look to bypass encounters entirely. You’re not working toward a Campaign score, so no need to take out every enemy — or, actually, any enemy — if you can skip them. (After all, Reach will get glassed anyway, yeah?)
  4. To do this, keep an eye out for perimeter runs along the outskirts of hot zones — not only will natural cover help you slip past Covies more easily, but they’ll be shooting only from one or two directions; get caught in a crossfire on Legendary and you might as well go grab a sandwich while your game Restarts.
  5. When you can’t bypass enemies, keep a distance/headshot weapon handy for taking them out at range. Use the level’s geography to find positions that offer clean lines of sight for precision kills before the enemy AI even figures out where you are.
  6. Effectively skipping one encounter can even bypass the encounter that comes after it, since enemy and vehicle drops often coincide with combat progress; you might find a subsequent battleground entirely empty, since the Covies will have only begun their landing sequence while you’re already getting the hell out of Dodge.
  7. If it looks like the designers want you to engage a major battle from an obvious point of attack, DON’T. The obvious attack points are for NORMAL difficulty. You’ll want another way in, or around, taking out an objective from afar or skipping a firefight entirely.

Whew! Quite a lot to keep in mind as you try to do the one of the Campaign’s hardest levels on its most extreme difficulty without dying once. To help you out, here’s a video walkthrough — done SOLO — that’s quite long (90 minutes) but well worth the watch if you get frustrated.
