Owning On ONI

So, you need to rack up some quick kills to finish off one of the “Any Game Mode” or “Campaign” Challenges. It’s the middle of the night, time is running out, and your girlfriend’s nagging you to turn off the XBox and come to bed. No worries: the ONI Sword Base Campaign level is here for you. (Go ahead and climb under the covers, babydoll; I’ll be right there.)

  1. Activate Campaign Scoring before you head in. The score you get won’t make a difference, but it’ll turn on the medals in the lower-left of your screen, which will help you with your timing. Set the difficulty to Normal unless you’ve got a reason to make it harder, and switch on the Cowbell Skull for extra fun.
  2. OK, go. At the start of the level, simply run up the ramp on your right and Sprint past the elite.
  3. Keep moving, and skip over the low terrace wall onto the ledge that runs along the right side of the map. Lots of enemies there, yeah? Don’t worry. They’ll die soon enough.
  4. Stay on the ledge and run past them, around the curve, and into the shelter of the empty vehicle depot at the end.
  5. On the far left side of the shelter, in one of the weapons cases, you’ll find the Halo Reach Destruct-o-Matic, also known as the Target Locator. It’s meant to take out the Wraiths in the next section of the mission, but we’ve got other plans.
  6. Along the slanted back wall of the shelter, you’ll find a Checkpoint. It’s a bit inconsistent about where and when it’ll appear, so just sweep the wall until it does. Got it? Awesome! Time to bring the thunder.
  7. Aim the Locator’s reticule at a pack of enemies. Hold the trigger until a large red circle appears around them. Once you’ve locked in the circle, you can also toss some grenades at the bad guys for good measure, if you like.
  8. Smile as you watch death rain down from above. Enjoy the smell of napalm in the morning.
  9. OK, now, remember that Checkpoint? When you see the medals stop flashing on your screen–the last ones will probably a Killionaire and/or a Spree–hit your Start button. Then, in the menu, pick Revert To Last Save. (Yeah, you know what’s coming, right?) It’ll restart your game back at the moment just before you aimed the Locator.
  10. And now: Rinse and repeat. Each pass-through should only take about 10-15 seconds to send the Covies on their Great Journey, and you’ll wrap up the challenge in no time at all.

Holy crap, that was easy. But just in case it wasn’t, here’s a video walk-through of the technique, in all its YouTube glory:

  1. ODST Alpha says:

If you time it right, you can get the checkpoint right as you finish targeting the area, and it shaves a few seconds off of how long it takes.

    • Ender Xer0 says:

I’ve actually seen someone who timed it so that he threw a grenade on himself an instant before he checkpointed, but AFTER the airstrike had been called in — so that the grenade would explode AFTER the checkpoint, killing him. The airstrike missiles would register multiple death-from-the-grave medals, and the game would automatically restart at the checkpoint…

…and the grenade would explode, the missiles would fall, the game would automatically restart…the grenade would explode, the missiles would fall, the game would automatically–well, you get the idea. In other words, he set it up so that his Target Locator would run itself, and he only needed to check in every five minutes or so to keep his controller from turning off.

What’s more, he was actually earning MORE cRedits than if he was actually AT his controller, since he was getting extra cR for his death-from-the-grave medals.

Amazing what some people will come up with…

  2. HypnoToad says:

I prefer to turn on the Thunderstorm skull. Sometimes its tricky to get there but when you do it will help with your ‘kill specialist/leader class’ enemy commendations.

  3. b0ngwat3r says:

when im done w/ this i save and quit and it doesnt reward me any of the points, am i doing something wrong?

    • St4t1C says:

It doesn’t reward very much points but all of the kills/sprees/medals go towards you commendations which pay off in the long run.

  4. ANDREW says:

Bungie turned down the cr i got to 0 cr. help!!

    • Ender Xer0 says:

Well, remember — we’re only using this to complete Challenges, not boost Commendations, etc. If you do it to notch a Challenge, you’ll get the Challenge bonus. Otherwise, not sure we can help you out…!
