A basic, straightforward Challenge. How long it takes simply depends on which playlists you prefer and how good you are at them. So, our standard recommendations:

  • Your best bet remains Rumble Pit, since the kills come fast and furious and you don’t need to worry about K/D — both the game and the Challenges only count kills, not deaths, so trading one-for-one with double-melees will rack up points while scattering your own deaths (more or less) among other players.
  • Most Pit Objective games (King Of The Hill, Oddball, etc.) can also rapidly increase your kill-count — they concentrate combat into small zones, making it easier to spam grenades, death-blossom your Assault Rifle or pickpocket kills from a gunbattle between other players.
  • Skip Juggernaut, however — a low-kill-count option that can leave you with no points at all.
  • For a change of pace, head over to Multiteam or the Team Slayer playlists (Slayer, Swat, Snipers). Avoid Team Objective, since these usually take longer and generate fewer kills.

The usual Challenge, with our usual comments: Working toward Assists can always be a hassle, since your natural instincts and gaming skills focus on putting down your enemies, not passing the kill off to another player; nobody makes the highlight reel by almost scoring 15 times. Despite that, Bungie intends to pay you today to help out players who haven’t really earned it as they cash in on your setup.

CANNON FODDER

Campaign

Infantry-class enemies are those weakest among the Covenant horde, and come in a few different flavors; they’re also the ones occasionally given really bitchin’ weapons like Fuel Rod Guns, the better to humiliate you with as you’re blown to hurtling pieces by a twerp you could have squashed with your elbow.

None of that will matter much, however, where we’re going:

  • By far the most convenient cannon-fodder carnage can be found at the opening of the Campaign’s ONI Sword Base mission. If you know it and don’t like the stigma of naked credit boosting, skip down. If you don’t know it, you can find a detailed rundown in the Owning On ONI permanent link on the top of this page. It’ll take about 18 to 20 thunderstorms to rain down enough death to register the Challenge, but each one only takes about 10 seconds, so we’re only talking about a couple of minutes.
  • But, if you don’t like the open credit farming that goes with Target Locating, just load up any Campaign mission that opens with Grunts — and preferably a headshot weapon — then start making confetti. We’re partial to Winter Contingency’s Rally Point Bravo, since the Dropships spit out waves of Grunts in a steady stream, but really any level will do. Once you’ve cleaned ’em out, just reload the checkpoint, rinse and repeat.
    HEROIC DEMON

    Firefight

    Special Enemy

    Time: 60-75 minutes

    Kill 30 Elites in Firefight Matchmaking on Heroic or harder.

    As with all Demon Challenges, the primary hassle remains that only a few Elites emerge in any Firefight Round. In Score Attack only a handful show their faces at all (usually five), and in a standard three-Round Firefight you’ll have three “teammates” (no, we won’t call them “allies”) competing to take them down. Even if they’re not angling for the Challenge, they’re still going to get in the way.

    • Your best bet, then, is to find enough friends for a Co-op Firefight and go into a Sniper or Rocketfight as a group of four: you can coordinate efforts, and with three Rounds worth of Dinos you can share generously amongst each other. You’ll still need at least three matches (and maybe four) for everyone to share-and-share-alike, but you’ll shovel a heap o’ cRedits into your wagon along the way.
    • By the Great Journey, explain the appeal of this demon Justin Bieber. What's that? Ghahckk is not an answer!

    • Without familiar partners, your best bet becomes Score Attack, where you control the map, gametype and who gets to score the Elites. Of course, it’ll still be a headache: Score Attack requires that you survive to party with the Elites, and when it’s you against the galaxy your chances grow slimmer with each Wave.
    • Ordinarily, this would mean a change in tactics, from run-and-gun to stealthy sniping, but you’re also racing a countdown timer; methodically thinning the herd while taking cover when your Shields crash could lead to surviving the fight…but never actually pwning any Dinosaurs.
    • So, veto until offered Sniperfight: it’ll clear Covie fodder faster, as well as efficiently rack up Elites. (There’s little point in a standard solo Firefight; Score Attack doesn’t feature Ordinance Drop.) Also look for a larger map, since close-quarter Firefights tend to become hot zones of clusterfuck explosions, with you inconveniently at the center of the fiesta.


    WEEKLY CHALLENGE


    NOT IN THE FACE

    Complete any Campaign mission on Heroic in 30 minutes with Black Eye on.

    Tip Of The Day

    Probably the easiest Weekly Challenge you’ll see in months — after all, the Challenge itself says that it won’t take more than 30 minutes. (And, trust us, it won’t even take that.) After a couple of Weekly Challenges that actually took all week, this one’ll take less time than a single game of Firefight or Invasion. Cash your cRedits, friend, and don’t complain.

    Okay, only one Skull on here, so let’s take a look: Black Eye disables your shield recharge, unless and until you melee an opponent. A bit retarded, yeah? OK, so it doesn’t make much sense, but it’s been around a long time; kind of like Ozzie Osbourne, neckties, and nipples on men. It is what it is, so don’t ask.

    So, the only real difference is that, like a teenage boy, you’ll need to smack a Grunt every now and again to freshen yourself up; other than that, it’s a typical Heroic Campaign level.

    Decide ahead of time if you intend to go in solo or co-op. If flying solo, your best bet will be to take the Midnight Run on Nightfall. (Never done the Midnight Run? Oh, you’re gonna like this.)

    • After assassinating the initial Elite at the opening of the mission, you’ll Sprint your way through almost the entire level, skirting the perimeter of the map, meleeing an occasional Grunt or Jackal as you go with only a small amount of gunfire when you reach the bridge to Powerhouse. There’s an absolute GEEEnius maneuver with the forklift (yes, the forklift!), and you won’t even encounter the Hunters at all.
    • Here’s a video of the complete route — the guy here finishes the level in five minutes, and that’s with ALL Skulls on; but even if Forky doesn’t immediately cooperate, you should still wrap it in under ten.


    On co-op, the Challenge becomes even easier. You’ve got a couple of solid options, but we prefer Winter Contingency. As the Campaign’s first playable level, it’s also by design the easiest, and the open-ended geography allows players to bypass most encounters entirely.

    • In fact, after the first faceoff with the Covenant, players can Sprint past the next skirmish, off the small cliff that leads to the Warthogs, then drive directly to the firefight at the last compound before the Falcons arrive; other than the occasional bloodthirsty Moa, you’ll hardly encounter any gunplay at all. (You can even skip most of the first clash, if you’re quick about it.)
    • The Falcons take you straight to another firefight at the final building of the level. From there, you need only dispatch a few butch Elites and their entourage to reach the level-ending cutscene.

    • Raining missiles down on ONI Sword Base like the fist of God remains your fastest method of scoring this Challenge. Four Elites await there to die by fire, and each airstrike should take out two or three; that means less than 15 minutes before you hit the magic 75 — the easiest Challenge cRedits you’ll score today. Check out our Owning on ONI standing link at the top of this page for complete instructions.
    • For some variety — and, OK, a whole lot of fun — you can load up the opening of Nightfall instead.
    1. You’ll find an Elite at the edge of the cliff taking a leak on the Grunts below, and who you’ll assassinate to start the level. (OK, maybe he’s not actually taking a leak; but then what the hell is he doing there?)
    2. Anyway, after a few quick melees to the sleeping Grunts nearby, ignore the encampment off to the side and slip instead toward the first makeshift Covie base.

      Don't worry, I've got your back. Just keep pushing forward and...oh, hey, is that Falcon getting off this rock? See ya!

    3. Hey, guess what? You’ve got a Sniper Rifle! Begin introducing cartridges to their foreheads.
    4. You’ll find eight more Elites scattered about, so you’ll score nine kills total before needing a Level Restart. Or, just keep going — the next encounter has more Elites, as well as the one after that, and so on.
    5. Don’t worry too much about Jun stealing kills; he follows the strictly-negotiated Teamster union rules for Halo AI allies, and will generally remain as unhelpful as possible.

    (Yes, we know: you can simply scope the level’s first Elite, locate the Checkpoint, then Revert to repeatedly blow his brains out. But if you thought 20+ reloads on ONI became tedious, try 75 on Nightfall. ZZzzzz.)

    You can likewise find concentrations of Elites throughout the Campaign — most notably on Pillar Of Autumn at the massive firefight in Boneyard; and at Tip Of The Spear’s Rally Point Bravo, where you’ll gun from the Falcon’s grenade launcher and reload the Checkpoint before you cross Spire’s energy shield. It all depends on how easy, challenging or interesting you want to make your Elite Hunt.

    POD KETTLE BLACK

    Kill 10 Elite Drop Pods in The Long Night of Solace.

    Tip Of The Day

    No, Elite Drop Pods are not what you see scattered about after Burrito Night at the Covenant High Command. You’ll find them instead on Long Night Of Solace, first at mission start when they impact the perimeter of the Sabre installation (which, apparently, was so secret that the Covies knew all about it).

    However, that is NOT where you’ll tackle this Challenge, since you’ve no way to target them as they hurtle from the sky. Instead, load up Rally Point Alpha, defending the soon-to-be-released Anchor 9 station with your Sabre.

      Hey look, an Anchor 9 Challenge right before its $10 DLC release. Ah, that Bungie--so clever.

    1. Dogfight your way past a few waves of Seraphs, Phantoms and Space Banshees, through the (unskippable) cutscene to the Corvette. Disable its engines, then maneuver beneath it, where you’ll find two crescents of lights. Eureka! Unlaunched Drop Pods. You can’t shoot ’em yet, but that won’t be long.
    2. Maneuver your Sabre either underneath the Corvette aiming up, or near the center of the crescents in a circular flight pattern, scoping the lights as you pan around. When one flares in a purplish burst, that’s a clutch of Drop Pods launching for the surface.
    3. Your targeting computer won’t register them for either of your guns, so you’ll need to use the Force and zero them by sight. They also rocket away at high velocity, giving you only a moment to attempt what resembles an accurate shot; after that, just fire into their vapor trails and hope for the best.
    4. Because Pods will outrace even your missiles, you’ll need to rely on your standard guns, but in truth your targets are little more than confetti; even a single trigger-pull will take one out. Often, though, you’ll be too far away to see it, and might only know you’ve hit when the Challenge counter flashes at the end of each Pod wave.
    5. Scoring ten won’t exactly be easy, since you’ll rely on luck as much as marksmanship, and complicating matters will be that not every Pod contains Elites — there’s no way to know, so you may need to take out more than ten. But neither is it particularly difficult, in the sense that you’re not really under enemy fire; more than anything, it’ll just be a matter of time.

It won’t be worth the tradeoff of an option like Sniperfight, but give it a try if you need a change of pace.

    Not much to say, other than if you haven’t started yet, you’ve long ago been shut out. Today’s Daily Challenges are eminently serviceable, however, so if you still need just a few completions you shouldn’t have any problem registering the Weekly as well.

    TAKE NOTE, however: With such a huge award, you still face the very realistic possibility of hitting the cRedit limit (60,000 cR) today. Remember, you’ll have just cleared at least one Daily Challenge, and probably more; since today’s Dailies total more than 6,000, you could collect more than a third of your limit just in bonuses (Daily + Weekly), not counting even more completing the Challenges themselves.

    So, inspect your Commendations NOW, and if you’re on the edge for any higher metals, avoid them until tomorrow. Thanksgiving leftovers won’t make you feel better about working all week toward the biggest bonus in Halo history, only to accidentally disqualify yourself.

    Tip Of The Day

    Your most difficult Challenge of the day; though similar tasks have previously required as many as 30 in a single game — so this one seems a bit more within, um, reach. (Get it? Okay, nevermind.)

    The lower kill-count edges Rumble Pit up to the top of your starting options, since its smaller, tighter maps put enemies almost constantly within range.

    However, because they pit only a timer against you rather than a maximum-kill limit, you still want to prefer Objective gametypes; particularly those — like King Of The Hill or Oddball — which encourage enemies to converge into single flashpoints. Just spam grenades into the hotzone, followed by DMR or Magnum headshots, along with and the occasional coup-de-grace melee rush.

    Avoid the area yourself, however; you’re less of a target if you’re not, you know, in the target. Remember, you’re going for kills, not game points, and the Challenge bonus will more than make up for whatever you lose by placing lower in the scoring grid.

    Also don’t be afraid to trade double-melees, or sacrifice yourself for a plasma stick. Again, you’re working your kills, not K/D, and another player’s kill-count won’t end an Objective match any faster.

    If you’ve got a friend, then even better: As I’ve said many times, Multiteam is pretty much just Rumble Pit With Partners; you can coordinate your efforts so that your teammate takes down an enemy’s Shields with a melee or plasma burst, setting you up for the easy headshot — and Challenge-point kill.

    COOK ‘EM, CLEAN ‘EM!

    Multiplayer

    Jetpacking

    Kills

    Kill 10 enemies in Multiplayer Matchmaking while you’re jetpacking.

    This Challenge is why you’ll see so many people jetpacking through Multiplayer today. If you’re a seasoned jetpacker, you won’t need any advice from here; if you’re not, it’s still going to be easy as hell.

    • To earn the Firebird Medal — and thus notch a kill toward the Daily Challenge — you need only be airborne from the moment you fire your final shot to when the game registers the kill; you don’t have to actually jetpack the entire gunfight.
    • That means you can move and fight as usual, and simply hit the jetpack as you take your killshot. (Which, in fact, is precisely what we recommend — it’s dead simple, and you’ll hardly need change your fighting style at all.) In fact, you can even hover just an inch aboveground, with barely any daylight between the floor and your boots, for your Firebird Medal to register.
    • It’ll also register with melees, assassinations, and weapons like Hammers and Swords; and with those weapons, you’ll even lunge pretty much the same as if your feet still touched the ground. Again, just hit your jetpack an instant before you strike and the Challenge point will register.
    • It won’t register, however, if you’re not actively “thrusting” when you make your kill; finish your enemy off while only in freefall and you’ll score an ordinary kill, not a Challenge point. So make sure you’re thrusting when you, ah, unload.
    • You only need 10 kills, so Rumble Pit remains your best bet, since you can take them all in a single game — there’ll be that many more enemies for you over most Team games, and you’ll have more chance to pocket cleanup kills from other players engaged in gunbattle.
    • Unless you’re an experienced jetpacker, avoid the larger, open maps (Powerhouse, Forge World) in favor of tighter, smaller ones (Sword Base, Zealot, Countdown), even if that sounds counter-intuitive. It’s real easy to get shot out of the sky if you don’t know what you’re doing, and a close-quarters map allows you to fight almost normally, jetpacking for a moment only as you close the deal.

    And HOLY CRAP, that’s the biggest Challenge bonus in the all-time history of Challenge bonuses. Yow!!!

    Not much to say, other than if you started yesterday, you can finish Thursday, while Thursday is also the last day to start without mathematically eliminating yourself. So, yeah: Thursday. Also known in America as THANKSGIVING. That means if you blow this off all week, you still have four days of no school or work to clear four Challenges a day, all while your extended family yells at you to get off the XBox.

    TAKE NOTE, however: With such a huge award, you face the very realistic possibility of hitting the cRedit limit (60,000 cR) on the day you complete this. Remember, you’ll have just cleared at least one Daily Challenge, and probably more; since the Dailies average about 5K-6K, you could collect over a third of your limit just in bonuses, not counting even more earned as part the Challenges themselves.

    • So, on the day you expect to hit 16 — remember, Thursday earliest — steer clear of Multiplayer (where you earn the most cRedits) unless it’s actually part of a Challenge.
    • Also, inspect your Commendations NOW, and spend the next three days clearing out any that might trigger a huge bonus on Thursday and blank your Challenge reward. No amount of turkey or football will make you feel better about working all week toward the biggest bonus in Halo history, only to accidentally disqualify yourself from collecting it.
    • Also, for those TRAVELING DURING THE HOLIDAYS: Keep in mind, Challenges reset just after 3 a.m. PST/6 a.m. EST, so people gone Wednesday through Sunday — who would otherwise be screwed — can still squeeze this in if they cleared all Challenges yesterday and get lucky in the days to come: Get up early on Wednesday to complete that day’s set, then play late Sunday night to wrap up what’s left over. (After all, it’s Thanksgiving: you’re supposed to wrap the leftovers. Lulz.) Just make sure to run the table on all four today,, because you won’t have any margin for error.

    Crazy? Sure. But 16,000 cRedits will make a man do crazy, yah?
