Load up any Campaign level on Normal that offers a precision weapon plus lots o’ Grunts, and get to work.

ONI Sword Base features a DMR start and opens in the middle of a firefight, plus there’s a Sniper Rifle at the end of the base-side Terrace for pwning Elites once you’ve cleared the Jackals and Grunts. Winter Contingency at Rally Point Bravo literally drops you into a Fodder-O-Rama of a firefight; and though you enter with an Assault Rifle, a DMR conveniently awaits your weapon swap on the asphalt leading to the rear bunker, with more ammo for it just inside.

(Nightfall, of course, spawns you with a Sniper, but with 50 kills in front of you, it’s not going to wrap things as quickly; and do you really want Jun telling you to “do it quiet” again? Anyway, take yer pick.)

Concentrate on headshots against Grunts and Jackals, since those award extra Medal cR, and don’t waste DMR ammo on the Elites — you’ll run out of enemies before hitting the half-century mark and need to revert the Checkpoint anyway; so, unless you feel like sniping, you might as well reset as soon as you’ve cleaned slate on the lesser Covies.

If you run low on ammo, simply swipe Needle Rifles from the fallen Jackals; those register precision kills like a DMR, but heading into a bunker for a DMR reload can trigger a Checkpoint, meaning you’d have to settle for a full level restart.

It shouldn’t be any problem to Magnum or DMR your way to seven Multikills, since the Grunts go down with one shot, travel in packs, and maneuver with the agility of highway roadside accident. So, if you can’t manage seven out of a single match, you’re just not trying.

Probably the most fun you’ll have snaring a Challenge all day.

  • We prefer Rumble Pit on smaller, tighter maps: Wherever you can sneak up on someone, catch them by surprise as they come ’round a corner or make a straight Sprint toward their unsuspecting spines will offer all sorts of banzai backstab openings.
  • Although you can Sprint for a cheetah-like takedown, you can stalk just as easily with Active Camo if you don’t mind alerting your prey to nearby danger, since Camo-crouched near a doorway or corner for a lightning strike will make the Discovery Channel highlight reel as well.
  • Though it often goes hand-in-glove with Rumble Pit recommendations, avoid Multi-Team for this one: There’s just too much damn gunfire everywhere, and you could easily find yourself Yoinked — or worse, Showstopped — as the Assassination animation plays.
  • Finally, an excellent point from reader MAL, who in real life makes his living as a professional assassin:

    Choosing a ‘Pro’ game in Matchmaking Rumble Pit, like Crazy King Pro or Slayer Pro, makes this extremely simple. The lack of radar will make it easy to sneak up on opponents and get multiple assassinations.

Um…what? Another one of these? Look, Bungie, we’re sorry we said that about your Mom, okay? Give us a break.

Anyway, our standard recommendations when it comes to L.D. Challenges: You’ll probably never do this alone, and if you can in fact handle a Legendary level solo without dying, you won’t need any advice from here. This one’s practically a Weekly Challenge, and while it’s not quite last week’s Mythic difficulty — LASO/SLASO requires virtually all Skulls on — it’s pretty damn close.

So, fair warning: if you’re tackling this, it will be out of inspiration for personal accomplishment or from a compulsive psychological defect to complete all the Challenges. The 5K bonus is in the penthouse of daily cR rewards, but since you’ve already played the campaign, you won’t earn much besides the Challenge award; and you could easily score that many cRedits playing Grifball for half an hour.

Still with us? Good. Four Skulls on — let’s take a look:

Mythic doubles enemy health. Thunderstorm upgrades their rank — which, ha ha, combines anti-awesomely with Mythic. Tough Luck helps enemies evade damage, while Tilt modifies the damage tables, generally in Covenant favor against Spartan weapons. So, basically, just about everything to make the Covies as invulnerable as possible without involving the planet Krypton.

On the other hand, Winter Contingency offers wide-open geography that helps your front-line fighters skirt past most encounters, while giving weaker players the opportunity to *ahem* “guard the rear flank” and Checkpoint forward once the danger has passed. So, though it’s true this level remains more welcoming to solo excursions — as the Campaign’s first mission, it’s also by design the easiest — and the game scales up the difficulty for more players in co-op mode, you’ll still want the extra guns at your side; otherwise, it could be a very long day of level Reloads.

ONE NOTE: If you don’t make it through the level alive, you can’t just hit Restart; you’ll need to Save-And-Quit, then reopen the level. Otherwise, it’ll still read your progress as Challenge Failed.

All right then. We don’t have room here for a detailed walkthrough, so just as we did with the LASO Challenges we’ll turn the microphone over to the Mythic Master — the jacket-strapped lunatic who invented the SLASO runs, Tyrant himself — and his in-depth guide posted on Halo.Bungie.Org, where the HRD Challenge Report written by Associate Editor FoxmanFX appears each day.

Meanwhile, check out the Legendary Strategies link at the top of the page for tips and tactics on tackling Legendary levels regardless of which mission you’re in. And, since the Challenge requires zero deaths, you’ll also need to play even more defensively — stealthy when possible, and get-the-hell-out when necessary. If you think you’ve just done something that would make an awesome kick-ass clip for your File Share, you’re probably not doing this right.

Okay, try this out tomorrow: When you wake up, go in and do a Midnight Run through Nightfall with some random Skulls switched on — then see if you register a Challenge at the end. My guess? About 50-50, depending on whether you picked the right Skulls.

Anyway, only one Skull on this time, so let’s take a look: Thunderstorm upgrades enemies to the next difficulty class; but, at the end of the day, you’re going to be Sprinting past most of them anyway. Here’s the vid of the speed run through Nightfall, just in case you’re new, and you can always click on the standing link at the top of the page for a more detailed description.

TRIPLE THRILL

Earn any 3 Sprees in a Multiplayer Matchmaking game.

This will be your most engaging Challenge today. Sprees — five-in-a-row medals, all without dying — can sometimes be a bit tricky, often depending not just on your own skill but the skill of your opponents or the skill of your teammates, or both.

The good news is that in Reach, Bungie has created a Spree medal for virtually everything. We’re accustomed to the Killing Spree and the occasional Sword or Shotgun Spree; but now there are Wheelman Sprees, Laser Sprees, Assist Sprees, and even Teabag and Rage Quit Sprees. (Though we’re pretty sure the medal for that last one is a Quit-Ban.) Also, there’s probably not a Teabag Spree. Yet.

How and where you get these Sprees depends entirely on your playstyle. If you prefer close-quarters combat, hunt out the Sword on a tight map and slash your way to bonus credits; if you like playing Infection — and *cough cough* who doesn’t? — there are even Sprees for blasting five Zombies or infecting five Humans in a row.

Just a few things to keep in mind:

  • In Objective games, the counter for Sprees doesn’t carry over from Round to Round. Get four kills in each Round of a 1-Flag game and you won’t score any Sprees even though you went 16-0. Contrast this with Invasion, which has Phases separate and apart from Rounds, and in which the counter does carry over from one to the next.
  • Some weapons will trigger two Sprees at once; for example, the Sword, Sniper and Hammer, since you’ll earn a Spree with the weapon in addition to your naked killstreak. Though we haven’t had a chance to test this out ourselves, we’re told that these twin-streaks actually earn you two notches toward your Daily Challenge, so you’ll particularly want to keep these in mind; likewise, the extended-streak awards — Killing Frenzy, Slice ‘N’ Dice, and so on — should score you additional notches as well.
  • If for some reason you’re still having Spree trouble and it’s running late in the day, you’ve got a few more options:
    1. Hop in a Warthog with a friend — preferably one who’s a good gunner — and joyride him around while he blazes metal. You’ll be working toward a Wheelman Spree, with the added possibility of a Splatter Spree as well. Don’t do it, though, if you’ve already notched a few kills in a row: because Reach has nerfed most vehicles into rolling deathtraps, you’re more likely to get blown to bits (by gunfire, Armor Lock, a flying traffic cone) before you land a good splatter or two, and your killstreak will end in its tracks.
    2. Despite this rolling-deathtrap observation, heavy vehicles can still be good for a few essential kills before they’re sent to scrap, especially against other vehicles. Hop in a Wraith or Revenant and play it conservatively, waiting for the other team to make its rush; you’ll score single- or Double-Kills against guys on the ground, Double- or Triple-kills against vehicles, and you can even boost for splatters when the need arises.
    3. Objective games, especially those on smaller maps, can be great for gathering Sprees: enemies usually converge into clustered hot zones, such as with King Of The Hill or Oddball, making it easier to spam grenades and fire into the crowd; and enemies often become so focused on the objective that they stop playing defensively, racing out in the open toward the waypoint, and surprised when you ambush them before they get there. (Don’t go into the Hill, or grab the Oddball yourself: That’s a sure way to get fragged. You’ll be trading some scoring points in the game for the chance to earn a sizable cRedit bonus at the end of the day.)
    4. Avoid Juggernaut games, however; unless you’re the Jugs himself — in which case you’ve got a great chance to Spree. More likely, though, you’ll go through the entire match without a single kill, let alone five.
    5. If you’re really desperate, head into Invasion. There’s actually a Medal called a Spawning Spree, in which you allow a teammate to spawn on you five times without dying. Retarded? Yes, but it’ll notch you toward your Challenge. Just keep yourself away from the “territory” zones but in a tactically useful spot, and your teammates will thank you for it.

Just for reference, here’s the list of Multiplayer Sprees you’ll find among the Halo Reach medals. Most have three levels (5/10/15), though straight kills measure up to 40 (“Unfrigginbelievable!”).

(Note that Hail To The King, although awarded for five kills within the Hill, does not itself count as a Spree medal, and so won’t register a second point in your Challenge count beyond your standard Spree.)

For “TRIPLE THRILL” I found the easiest way is to play Infection and only use your shotgun for 5 kills in a row. Killing spree, shotgun spree, zombie killing spree, done and done.

The drawback, of course, is that you’ll be playing Infection. But for one game, I suppose we can manage. Thanks, Gunner!

Tip Of The Day

As with most of the LASO Challenges, we have our standard warning: There’s really no other way to say this, but you’re probably never going to do this alone. (If you can handle a Legendary level solo without dying, though, you won’t need any advice from here.) And, while it’s not quite Mythic difficulty — SLASO is solo-only, and includes the Blind Skull — it’s pretty damn close.

So, while it’s true that the game amps up the difficulty for more players in Co-op mode, you’ll want the three more guns at your side; otherwise, it’ll just be a very long day of level Reloads.

OK then. The mission’s much too long for a detailed walkthrough, so instead keep in mind some strategies that help on Legendary difficulty no matter which part of the campaign:

  1. On Legendary, Reach becomes an almost entirely different game; rather than the run-and-gun, blaze-of-glory style you enjoyed on Normal, Legendary relies much more on strategy than sheer skill. Your kung fu may be strong, but you won’t be able to ninja your way out of a Legendary plasma shitstorm.
  2. Since the Iron Skull will force the entire team back to a Checkpoint after a single player death, you’ll also need to play even more defensively— stealthy when possible, and get-the-fuck-out when necessary. If you think you’ve just done something that would make an awesome kick-ass clip for your File Share, you’re probably not doing this right.
  3. In almost every situation, look to bypass encounters entirely. You’re not working toward a Campaign score, so no need to take out every enemy — or, actually, any enemy — if you can skip them. (After all, Reach will get glassed anyway, yeah?)
  4. To do this, keep an eye out for perimeter runs along the outskirts of hot zones — not only will natural cover help you slip past Covies more easily, but they’ll be shooting only from one or two directions; get caught in a crossfire on Legendary and you might as well go grab a sandwich while your game Restarts.
  5. When you can’t bypass enemies, keep a distance/headshot weapon handy for taking them out at range. Use the level’s geography to find positions that offer clean lines of sight for precision kills before the enemy AI even figures out where you are.
  6. Effectively skipping one encounter can even bypass the encounter that comes after it, since enemy and vehicle drops often coincide with combat progress; you might find a subsequent battleground entirely empty, since the Covies will have only begun their landing sequence while you’re already getting the hell out of Dodge.
  7. If it looks like the designers want you to engage a major battle from an obvious point of attack, DON’T. The obvious attack points are for NORMAL difficulty. You’ll want another way in, or around, taking out an objective from afar or skipping a firefight entirely.

Whew! Quite a lot to keep in mind as you try to do the one of the Campaign’s hardest levels on its most extreme difficulty without dying once. To help you out, here’s a video walkthrough — done SOLO — that’s quite long (90 minutes) but well worth the watch if you get frustrated.

Head into Score Attack and veto the game options until you find a Gruntpocalypse gametype on a smaller map: Corvette, atop one of the platforms, and Overlook, on the lower of the two sheds near the silo, both provide wide lines of sight for sending Grunts on their Great Journey. The big guns on Outpost and the far-side walkway on Courtyard also offer excellent defensive positions; a larger open map like Waterfront will work too, but it’ll take longer.

  • Select Drop Shield as your Armor Ability: you’ll be staking a position and staying there, so protection (and especially health regeneration) becomes more important than mobility.
  • Make sure to hit up your ammo case before heading out; otherwise, you could find yourself on a raging headshot streak, only to have to thread your way through combat back to base when your clip runs dry.
  • Stay high, for a good line of site around the battlefield, or along the perimeter, to avoid a crossfire, or both. On Corvette, any of the platforms will do; on Courtyard, camp in the terrace corners. On a map like Waterfront, perch on the cliff at the far end across the field or atop one of the main buildings — the first makes for easier headshots, the second for easier ammo access.

    Tip Of The Day

  • You’re going to get a Target Locator as part of your Ordinance Drop (unless you’re on Corvette, where you’ll probably get a laser). Yes, yes, yes…you’re going to be tempted to use it to watch a killionaire worth of Grunts explode. Your orders here, Spartan, are: DON’T. You’re going for headshots here, and only about 120 Grunts will waddle to doom in each Gruntpoc match. Some will accidentally kill each other, or themselves, or both. This leaves more than enough for your Challenge, but not enough if you’ve burned through two dozen with missiles from God.

    Instead, nail 100 of the little tykes with Birthday bullets, successfully clear the Challenge, and THEN finish off the match with some glorious skyfire. It’ll be certain to wrap up your Killagruntjaro! Challenge (see below), as well as be your best Gruntpocalypse finale ever.

Despite its name, Killagruntjaro, doesn’t actually require you to jaro anything, though we will be going with Gruntpocalypse on Score Attackto do this at the same time as Hyper Lethal Vector. It’s shouldn’t be any problem to DMR your way to 10 multikills, since the Grunts go down with one shot, travel in packs, and maneuver with the agility of highway roadside accident. So, if you can’t manage 10 Multikills out of a single match, you’re just not trying.

Yes, you can also certainly clear this in almost any Firefight Arcade match — we prefer FRGFight, though smashing the hell out of Covies with Overshields and a Gravity Hammer gives us a boner too. Or, you can choose Nadefight, and pull pins through your Blast Radius Challenge (see below) as well. If you’ve got the extra time, then by all means spin the wheel.

You can work this one at the same time as today’s other Firefight Challenges — by itself, we’d ordinarily recommend Gruntpocalypse in Score Attack, since it’s easy to nail the waddlin’ tykes while they’re still in a spawn pack — but if you’re combining Challenges, the opening Waves of each Round in a Firefight Arcade game will do the trick just as well.

Load up Nadefight for an eight-grenades bandoleer to start, then regularly farm Plasmas from the battlefield during a break in the action; or, go cheap and just get yourself killed, since you can respawn where the action is with a new grenade stock. (Lazy? Sure. But we’re not here to give advice on making life more difficult, yeah?)


WEEKLY CHALLENGE


CLEAR EYES, FULL HEARTS

And it’s just like it sounds: play enough games and you’ll rack up 50 wins. That divides almost evenly into seven wins per day; considering that some Dailies require as many as seven wins, this one’s little more than just a fifth Daily Challenge that you get paid for at the end of the week; besides, you’d be hanging out in Multiplayer matches anyway.

TAKE NOTE, however: Despite what it may say on your Reach game stats page over at Bungie.net, simply finishing in the top half of a Free-For-All game will NOT register as a win for your Challenge progress here — you’ll need to place First, or not at all.

Likewise, avoid any Objective gametypes that frequently end in a tieCapture The Flag or Assault, for example — since although your game score registers a win for both sides (that is, you both came in “first”), the Weekly Challenge is not so generous; either one team takes the top spot, or both sides lose.

Retarded? Sure. Just think of it like that airhead girl you’ve got to put up with just so she’ll, you know…give you 7,777 cR at the end of the date. Anyway, both of these glitches mean that Team Slayer gametypes become your best option:

  • Avoid Big Team Battle and Invasion; though generally worth more cRedits, they also take longer, and you’re targeting wins here, not just cR. Plus, you can spend twice as much time in a Big Team game and still have a 50% chance of finishing without any Challenge progress; two smaller-squad games will earn just as many credits in the same time, but double your chances at a win.
  • If you’re a weaker player, you can still play a support role to earn the Challenge. Stick by at least one of your comrades to help him team-shoot, watching his back and providing cover fire. Play defensively, helping allies with assists rather than charging in for a big kill; finishing with a low score but only a few deaths is far more important than letting the other team run up their number by stacking your corpses.
  • Remember when I said to avoid Objective games? Well, just as it does with most things, Grifball breaks the rules. Games are usually quick and generally won’t end in a tie, and so all other things being equal you’ll go in with about a 50-50 chance of pulling Host and scoring the win.

And that’s what first suggested to us the idea for this column: We noticed a sizeable community of folks who really dug this site — posting comments here and on the Bungie.net message boards, sending us emails and/or Friend Requests over Xbox Live — but who never submitted any Screenshots. When I suggested it to them, as a way for me to thank them for such amazing support by showcasing them on the Front Page, some of them actually declined, concerned that their Screenshots just wouldn’t measure up.

That had never actually occurred to us, and we realized there were probably all sorts of readers who felt the same way. So, we invited Fiver to fill our standard Screenshot Of The Day space with something special: The Official HRD Screenshot Guide, with all the advice you’ll need to create that ass-kicking, holy-crap, this-is-going-in-my-File-Share Kodak moment.

When we first ran one of Fiver’s Screenshots, we commented in passing that it showed such skill that he could probably teach an art class. Guess what? He does! So, yeah — not only are we preternaturally psychic, but the man knows what he’s talking about. SCREENSHOT OF THE DAY: SPECIAL EDITION!




TAKING EFFECTIVE SCREENSHOTS

Artful Fiver here. One of the coolest things about Halo Reach Daily is the Screenshot Of The Day feature, showcasing us, the members of Halo Nation in pitched battle. However, not all Screenshots are created equal. Here is one Spartan’s advice on how to create compelling Screenshots of you doing your thing and maybe score yourself some front-page action.



Bungie made your Spartan model a statuesque tank who strikes poses just standing around, so your job is to supply the game play that yields explosions, shattered vehicles, flying bodies, stuff like that. At the same time you should keep an eye out for interesting moments in the game play in between those big, loud, dramatic moments. The first lesson of the Theater is that you can learn from watching Halo as well as playing Halo. Watch yourself play campaign, watch yourself in multiplayer, watch your opponents in multiplayer. Watch and learn.



Photographers talk about the “Rule of Thirds.” Psychologically, the human eye naturally drifts to a point two-thirds of the way up an image. A good rule of thumb when composing your Screenshot is to put your horizon line on a “third”: one-third from the top (emphasis on the sky) or one-third from the bottom (emphasis moves to the sky). See the two diagrams at left (stacked top and bottom) for examples.

Advanced applications: Imagine the page is divided into three columns and three rows; the intersections are the compositional sweet spots. (See the diagram with the red dots for an example.) Try to compose your image with the key action or focus falling exactly on one of these spots and you’ll already be ahead of the game.

This just represents the basics, and all you’ll need to get started; if you want to learn more, look up “The Golden Section” on Google as it applies to visual composition; lots of great stuff on the concept — you’ll be amazed how much you already knew without realizing it.

Camera placement is probably the next most important consideration.

As the “cinematographer”, you’re in charge of framing the shot. A camera placed low and looking up will generally make your Spartan seem more grand and iconic. Placing the camera at eye level can create the impression that behind the visor, that Spartan is looking at YOU, mister.

Look below at the sample images from the same opening moment of Nightfall and notice how camera placement radically changes things.





Bungie spent a lot of time making Reach a highly detailed world for you to play in. The background of your Screenshot can accentuate your portrait (explosive action with busy background) or contrast it (simple, uncluttered backgrounds will focus the eye on the detailed figure). Artsy-tartsy folks will talk about each picture having a foreground, middle-ground, and background, and remind you to make deliberate choices for each zone when designing your image.

The Screenshot of the shotgun kill in Reflection (below) is an example of background supporting the action. If I were a snooty art professor, I might claim: “the repeating geometric architecture rendered in three-point perspective is echoed in the angled limbs of the tumbling figure in the foreground, whose legs frame our protagonist”. Or you could do away with the artsy mumbo-jumbo, and just say, “That dude got owned! He landed on his head!”

Other times the background can become a framing device if you strategically align the action with scenery, distinct architecture, or even empty space.

Negative space (the empty area surrounding a figure) is important; always give your subject room to look into. The Rule of Space says that a person looking off stage and placed too close to the edge looks like he’s exiting. The more dramatic the pose, the more asymmetrically you can place the figure and still maintain balance.

How many knives can you spot? Give the man some room!


Depth of field can be another powerful device: Remember that you can click the right thumbstick to zoom the camera in. This is great for close-ups as well as compressing distances. Consider placing something (or someone) large in the foreground, then using the zoomed-in camera to peer over their shoulder.



Over-the-shoulder depth, figures placed on thirds, simple background highlights action... wait, is that a shotgun? *BAM!*




The pose you see the most while playing and watching Halo is your running Spartan with weapon shouldered. The only thing wrong with this pose? Everybody uses it.

Halo: Reach has built in model animations for all kinds of things. When you climb in or out of a vehicle, you see an animation different from 90% of your regular gameplay (running and gunning). Most of the Screenshot examples in this article capture specific animations that come and go in the blink of eye when you’re playing. Assassinations, melees, sprinting, jumping, assassinations (and did I mention assassinations?) — even hitting the button to change weapons will allow you to capture your Spartan with his gun down in a “resting” stance, and where you can see his face from either side.

Wait...did I mention Assassinations? OK, just checking.

So next time you have a great game, head for the Theater for the play-by-play. Remember to slow down and view potential Screenshot moments from different angles, making use of the right-click-to-zoom technique when needed.

When you get to a Screenshot-worthy event, watch it a couple of times so you can be sure you’re capturing the pivotal moment. Be aware of your background, the placement of figures, and the lighting. Hopefully we’ll see some of your excellent Screenshots here on Halo Reach Daily soon!

A basic, straightforward Challenge; how long it takes simply depends on which playlists you prefer and how good you are at them. So, our standard recommendations:

  • Your best bet remains Rumble Pit or Multi-Team, since the kills come fast and furious and you don’t have to worry about K/D — both the game and Challenges only count kills, not deaths, so trading one-for-one with double-melees will rack up points while scattering your own deaths (more or less) among the other players. Rumble Pit’s slightly better for kills, Multi-Team is slightly better for Assists (and the A Great Friend Challenge, below), so take yer pick.
  • Most Pit Objective gametypes (King Of The Hill, Oddball, etc.) also usually increase your kill-count, since they concentrate combat into small zones, making it easier to spam grenades, death-blossom your Assault Rifle or pickpocket kills from a gunbattle between other players.
  • However, skip Juggernaut — a low-kill-count option that can leave you with no kills at all.
  • For a change of pace, head into the Team Slayer playlists (Slayer, Swat, Snipers), but Avoid Team Objective, since games usually take longer and generate fewer kills.

You’ll also be able to pocket the Heroic Killagruntjaro Challenge (see below) at the same time, so make sure to coordinate those Multikills.

Corvette, atop one of the platforms, and Overlook, on the lower of the two sheds near the silo, both provide wide lines of sight for sending Grunts to their birthday party; the big guns or main deck on Outpost and the far-end walkway corners on Courtyard also offer excellent defensive positions. Use your Drop Shield liberally to keep the party going, and focus on headshots, since the medals register bonus cRedits.

You’ll already have fired up the Gruntpocalypse of your choice for the One Spartan Army Challenge, so might as well DMR your way to 10 Multikills while you’re there. The Grunts go down with one shot, travel in packs and maneuver like Bristol Palin on Dancing With The Grunts, so if you can’t manage 10 Multikills out of a single match, you’re just not trying.

ONE NOTE: Unlike some similar Challenges, chaining Multikills together here WILL register multiple points on your Challenge meter. The coding counts Medals, not actual kills; so, while a previous Overkill didn’t register a second Double-Kill Medal — and thus counted as only one point for the DK Challenge — this Challenge registers ANY Multikill. That means a Double-Kill that stacks into a Triple and eventually an Overkill nets you three Challenge points, not just one.

Just don’t shoot at Bristol; it’s not her fault.

Perform an Assassination in a Multiplayer Matchmaking game.

Probably the most fun you’ll have snaring a Challenge all day, although this one, like life itself, will be over in the blink of an eye. There’s at least as many ways to perform an Assassination as there are Karate Kid sequels, but you’ve got a few options in front of you to make-it-quick as you show no mercy and go Cobra-Kai on your enemies.

  • Head into Rumble Pit and look for smaller, tighter maps: Anywhere you can sneak up on someone, catch them by surprise as they come ’round a corner or make a straight Sprint toward their unsuspecting spines will offer all sorts of banzai backstab openings. Just remember: If do right, no can defense.
  • As noted, you can select Sprint for a cheetah-like takedown, though if you don’t mind alerting your prey to nearby danger, you can stalk with Active Camo just as easily. In fact, Camo-crouched near a doorway or corner for a lightning strike will make the Discovery Channel highlight reel as well.
  • Though it often goes wax-on-wax-off with Rumble Pit recommendations, avoid Multi-Team for this one: There’s just too much damn gunfire everywhere, and you could easily find yourself Yoinked — or worse, Showstopped — as the animation plays.
  • And, an excellent point from MAL in our Comments section below:

    Choosing a ‘Pro’ game in Matchmaking Rumble Pit, like Crazy King Pro or Slayer Pro, will make it extremely simple to perform an assassination. The lack of a radar will make it easy to sneak up on opponents and get multiple assassinations.

This is actually a replay of the first-ever Weekly Challenge issued by Bungie when Reach first dropped; that week, players had one fewer day to complete it, since the game didn’t see release until Tuesday — so if you accidentally missed it then, this is your chance to take care of it.

Because of the length of today’s Update and this Challenge’s complexity, we’re going to go ahead and initially post without the bitchin’ in-depth guides you’re accustomed to; we figure it’s better to get started on the Dailies rather than wait for strategies on completing missions that you’ve most likely done already.
