You Knew It Was Coming: The final campaign mission on the most freakishly hard difficulty setting. We’re ready; how ’bout you??

As with most of the LASO Challenges, we have our standard warning — you’re probably never going to do this alone, and if you can handle a Legendary level by yourself without dying, you don’t need any advice from HRD. So, while it’s true that the game amps up the difficulty for more players in Co-op mode, you’ll want the three more guns at your side; otherwise, it’ll just be a very long day of level Reloads.

OK then. The mission’s much too long for a detailed walkthrough here, so just as we did with the previous Campaign missions we’re going to turn the microphone over to the Mythic Master — the jacket-strapped lunatic who invented the SLASO runs, Tyrant himself — and his in-depth guide posted on Halo.Bungie.Org, where the HRD Challenge Report written by Associate Editor Foxman FX appears each day.

Meanwhile, the LASO and L.D. (Legendary Difficulty) Challenges have cycled into the regular rotation so often that we’ve gone and created a permanent standing page of all of our standard strategies for tackling the game on its hardest setting, no matter which Challenge or part of the Campaign. DAILY CHALLENGES

  • By far the most convenient carnage remains at the opening of the Campaign’s ONI Sword Base mission. If you know it and don’t like the stigma of naked credit boosting, skip down. If you don’t know it, you can find a detailed rundown in the Owning On ONI permanent link on the top of this page.
  • But, if you don’t like the open credit farming that goes with Target Locating, simply rack up some quick kills in a Custom Game instead. Click on the Grunt Game Settings link at the top of the page for instructions on the best settings; you’ll also find a Custom Game there already set up for you.

Earn 20 kills with precision weapons in Multiplayer Matchmaking.

All sorts of options here, since “Precision Weapon” includes Snipers, Needle Rifles, and the trusty standard-issue DMR. (Even though your Magnum is a headshot weapon, it’s actually classified as a Sidearm; the Focus Rifle is a precision weapon too, but they’re fewer and further between in Multiplayer.)

Both SWAT and Team Snipers seem obvious choices, though just about any gametype with a DMR start will qualify. In the playlists that don’t emphasize one-hit kills — Team Slayer, Rumble Pit, for example — keep in mind that you only need your DMR for the final shot: soften up (but don’t kill) enemies with grenades before you open fire, take down shields with an overcharged Plasma Pistol and follow melees with a headshot rather than a second melee.

Remember also that you only need use a precision weapon to score a kill, not necessarily a headshot — so feel free to Supercombine with a Needle Rifle, it’ll uptick your Challenge meter just the same.

THERE ARE MANY LIKE IT. . .

Kill 200 enemies with precision weapons in the Campaign today.

Load up any Campaign level on Normal that offers a precision weapon plus lots o’ Grunts, and get to work.

ONI Sword Base features a DMR start and opens in the middle of a firefight, plus there’s a Sniper Rifle at the end of the base-side Terrace for pwning Elites once you’ve cleared the Jackals and Grunts. Winter Contingency at Rally Point Bravo literally drops you into a Fodder-O-Rama of a firefight; and though you enter with an Assault Rifle, a DMR conveniently awaits your weapon swap on the asphalt leading to the rear bunker, with more ammo for it just inside.

(Nightfall, of course, spawns you with a Sniper, but with 200 kills in front of you, it’s not going to wrap things as quickly; and do you really want Jun telling you to “do it quiet” again? Anyway, take yer pick.)

Concentrate on headshots against Grunts and Jackals, since those award extra Medal cR, and don’t waste DMR ammo on the Elites — you’ll run out of enemies before hitting the double-century mark and need to revert the Checkpoint anyway; so, unless you feel like sniping, you might as well reset as soon as you’ve cleaned slate on the lesser Covies.

If you run low on ammo, simply swipe Needle Rifles from the fallen Jackals; those register precision kills like a DMR, but heading into a bunker for a DMR reload can trigger a Checkpoint, meaning you’d have to settle for a full level restart.

HEROIC HOLDOUT

Firefight

Kill 150 enemies on Holdout on Heroic in Firefight Matchmaking.

Your biggest obstacle here will be waiting for the map to surface in the voting options; if you’re not the quitting type, you may have to grind through two or three other Firefights for each chance at Holdout.

Just about any Arcade Firefight (short of the two grenade launchers) will let you rack up quick kills, but keep in mind you’ll have three other allies firing into the crowds as well; if your Rockets or Fuel Rods show up late to the party, you won’t end up with any points on your dance ticket.

To maximize your Holdout map time in a more standard Firefight, you might also be tempted to Sprint for the Target Locator; but, since everybody’s got that idea, you’ll only have a 1-in-4 chance of actually snaring it. And, if you don’t, you’ll be out of position for when the fun begins.

  • Instead, consider forgoing the Ordinance Drops to take up a good position with a DMR loadout; the first targets are Grunts and Jackals, both of which drop from single headshots. By the time the Target Locator charges and fires, you’ll have already racked up nearly as many kills — all with bonus headshot points — and be in position for more.
  • As more Waves arrive, ignore the Brutes and Elites until you’ve cleared the decks of lesser infantry; remember, you’re going for straight kills, not Firefight points, and mixing it up with tougher enemies will surrender easy kills to your fellow Spartans.
  • Also don’t waste time on the Hunters; they don’t register all that many points for the effort involved, you’ll burn through good ammo and, with your teammates firing on them too, you may not even collect the kill.

Okay, this one’s pretty straightforward.

  1. Get a monkey.
  2. Go into Matchmaking.
  3. Give the controller to the monkey.
  4. Go get a sandwich.

If you’re having trouble finding a monkey, you can actually do this yourself, though it may take longer. Load up Rumble Pit or Multi-Team and look for close-quarter maps that specialize in clusterfuck explosions, as well as gametypes like Oddball or King Of The Hill that encourage players to run into the middle of the body-part fiesta.

Also vote for game variants with Plasma Grenade loadouts, since they’ll score more direct kills with a successful stick — Pro-style games remain your best bet, since the Warden option includes Covie grenades and the matchtype doesn’t offer Armor Lock. Any Elite game can also work if you’re smart about it: save your stickies for enemies wielding Plasma or Needle Rifles, since the basic Needler remains a tipoff that the player may have loaded up Armor Lock.

And, oh yeah–don’t forget: Return the monkey. You don’t want to find out what those guys use for grenades.

  • I get tons of Friend Requests on Xbox thanks to this site, but I also get what is likely a fair share of randoms too — except that on Xbox Live, there’s no way to tell the difference. If you want to send me a Friend Request, go right ahead, I’m always happy to play with whoever’s available; but also send me a separate message as well, so that I know you’re from HRD, and there won’t be any chance of me saying, “Who’s this?” and deleting the req. Thanks!
  • We also love getting Comments and Email, but, keep in mind that HRD’s party lounge aboard the Pillar of Awesome is a No-Douchebag Zone. We don’t mind criticism; we just don’t like douchebags. Don’t attack other people in the Comments section, and don’t attack us for not approving your Comment when you do. If you really can’t restrain the urge to douche, then Bungie.net is thataway; trust me, you’ll feel right at home.   • For your leftovers, by far the easiest method of mayhem remains the opening of the Campaign’s ONI Sword Base mission. If you know it and don’t like the stigma of naked credit boosting, skip down. If you don’t know it, you can find a detailed rundown in the Owning On ONI standing link on the top of this page.
  • But, if you don’t like the open credit farming that goes with Target Locating, simply rack up some quick kills in a Custom Game instead. Click on the Grunt Game Settings link at the top of the page for instructions on the best settings; you’ll also find a Custom Game there already set up for you.
  • Alternately, take a scan of your Commendations progress, particularly in Firefight. If you’re close on anything relevant — say, for example, headshots or close-quarter kills — use the Custom Games option but change the weapon or enemy settings to fit, and increase your damage while reducing the enemies’ resistance; you’ll work your Commendations at the same time that you register Daily Challenge kills. For Campaign, load a Level or Rally Point that works your Commendation progress, and your Daily Challenge kills will simply come along for the ride.
JUST A SHOWER

Campaign

Skull On

Type: Completion
Setting: Campaign
Difficulty: Easy

Complete any Campaign mission on Normal or harder with Thunderstorm on.

OK, only one Skull on, so lets take a look: Thunderstorm upgrades enemies to the next difficulty class; but, at the end of the day, a headshot is still a headshot, and the n00b combo works just as well on officers as infantry. And, where we’re going, it’ll hardly make a difference anyway.

Decide ahead of time if you intend to go in solo or co-op. If flying solo, your best bet will be to take the Midnight Run on Nightfall. (Never done the Midnight Run? Oh, you’re gonna like this.)

  • After assassinating the initial Elite at the opening of the mission, you’ll Sprint your way through almost the entire level, skirting the perimeter of the map, meleeing an occasional Grunt or Jackal as you go with only a small amount of gunfire when you reach the bridge to Powerhouse.
  • There’s an absolute GEEEnius maneuver with the forklift (yes, the forklift!), and you won’t even encounter the Hunters at all. The extra health, damage resistances and upgrades to enemy rank will hardly figure in, since you’ll spend most of the level along the perimeter, Sprinting at a full clip.
  • Here’s a video of the complete route — the guy here finishes the level in five minutes, and that’s with ALL Skulls on; but even if Forky doesn’t immediately cooperate, you should still wrap it in under ten.



On co-op,
the Challenge becomes even easier. You’ve got a couple of solid options, but we prefer either New Alexandria or Winter Contingency.

As the Campaign’s first playable level, Winter Contingency is by design the easiest, and the open-ended geography allows players to bypass most encounters entirely.

  • In fact, after the first faceoff with the Covenant, players can Sprint past the next skirmish, off the small cliff that leads to the Warthogs, then drive directly to the firefight at the last compound before the Falcons arrive; other than the occasional bloodthirsty Moa, you’ll hardly encounter any gunplay at all. (You can even skip most of the first clash, if you’re quick about it.)
  • The Falcons take you straight to another firefight at the final building of the level. From there, you need only dispatch a few butch Elites and their entourage to reach the level-ending cutscene. You’ll actually be able to wrap the entire Challenge in 10 or 15 minutes.

New Alexandria, meanwhile, features long stretches of aerial combat unaffected by the rank of your enemies; when you destroy a Banshee, it’ll be the explosion that kills the pilot, not your gunfire, so his corpse will tumble from the sky no matter what style armor he’s wearing.

  • When you need to take an Objective on foot (three times total), leave one teammate behind with the Falcons. Most of the time you’ll simply be able to Sprint past enemies to reach the Objective switches; but in any event, the real hardcore combat only occurs once you’ve hit the switch and reinforcements storm your location.
  • Hey, look at that! If you get killed, you simply respawn back up with the teammate who’s making sure no one steals the Falcon’s hubcaps. Hop back in the choppers, job done.
KILLAGRUNTJARO!

Firefight

Single Match

Multikill

Type: Multikills
Setting: Firefight
Difficulty: Easy
Reward: 1000

Earn 10 Multikills in a Firefight Matchmaking game.

Previous ‘Gruntjaro Challenges required a number of Multikills that discouraged one-Round play, and therefore the Gruntpocalypse game option; for this one, though, it’ll be no problem at all.

Fire up a confetti-bursting Score Attack and get to work. Pick a smaller, open map — we prefer Corvette or Courtyard — since the little tykes will emerge in packs, offering perfect Multikill targets for your opening grenade spam. A few more quick trigger pulls and you’ll cash in 1,000 cRedits.

Or, if you’d like, you can just as easily recover a Fuel Rod Gun and some Plasma Grenades to let the explosions do the work. A favorite pasttime here at HRD is to Fuel Rod a Forklift as the Grunts waddle by and score a few Splatters along the way. Fun, yeah!

And just a quick NOTE: Unlike some Multikill Challenges, chaining medals together here WILL register multiple points on your Challenge meter. The coding counts medals, not actual kills; so, while a previous Overkill didn’t register a second Double-Kill Medal — and thus counted as only one point for a DK Challenge — this Challenge registers ANY Multikill. That means a Double-Kill that stacks into a Triple and eventually an Overkill nets you three Challenge points, not just one.

Who the hell is Chaddlesby? Okay, whatever. It’s not like other Challenge titles make any sense half the time either.

Anyway, apparently Chaddlesby is interested in justice, which is really all your DMR needs to know. The Avenger Medal requires that you dispatch a teammate’s killer within a few moments (about four seconds) of his death; your best bet for that is Multiteam, since (ideally) you’ll be traveling in pairs and team-shooting with your partner — meaning that if one of you gets killed, the other has the setup to score the medal against a weakened opponent. Simply play enough games, and you’ll notch the Challenge.

Most other Team playlists will work well enough too, though avoid SWAT and Snipers, since these gametypes tend toward long-range kills from defensible positions, making it less common you’ll dispatch a teammate’s killer right away. Also look for smaller, tighter maps, where close combat — particularly melees and grenade spam — will help score the medal before your teammate’s killer escapes.

Just like it sounds: play enough games and you’ll rack up 50 wins. That divides almost evenly into seven wins per day; considering that last week’s Home Field Advantage Challenge required eight wins, this one’s just a fifth Daily Challenge that you get paid for at the end of the week.

TAKE NOTE, however: Despite what it may say on your Reach game stats page over at Bungie.net, simply finishing in the top half of a Free-For-All game will NOT register as a win for your Challenge progress here — you’ll need to place First, or not at all.

Likewise, avoid any Objective gametypes that frequently end in a tieCapture The Flag or Assault, for example — since although your score registers a win for both sides (that is, you both came in “first”), the Weekly Challenge is not so generous; either one team takes the top spot, or both sides lose.

Retarded? Sure. Just think of it like that airhead girl you’ve got to put up with just so she’ll, you know…give you 5,000 cR at the end of the date. Anyway, both of these glitches mean that Team Slayer gametypes become your best option:

  • Avoid Big Team Battle and Invasion; though generally worth more cRedits, they also take longer, and you’re targeting wins here, not just cR. Plus, you can spend twice as much time in a Big Team game and still have a 50% chance of finishing without any Challenge progress; two smaller-squad games will earn just as many credits in the same time, but double your chances at a win.
  • If you’re a weaker player, you can still play a support role to earn the Challenge. Stick by at least one of your comrades to help him team-shoot, watching his back and providing cover fire. Play defensively, helping allies with assists rather than charging in for a big kill; finishing with a low score but only a few deaths is far more important than letting the other team run up their number by stacking your corpses.
