MORE THAN A HANDFUL

Multiplayer

Kills

Type: Kills
Setting: Multiplayer
Difficulty: Grind
Reward: 1250

Kill 125 enemies in Multiplayer Matchmaking.

A basic, straightforward Challenge; how long it takes simply depends on which playlists you prefer and how good you are at them. You’ll also be off to a decent start simply by completing the other three Challenges today — and, if you’re lucky, you might even wrap it completely, so take this one on last.

For your leftover, our standard recommendations:

  • Your best bet remains Rumble Pit, since the kills come fast and furious and you don’t have to worry about K/D — both the game and Challenges only count kills, not deaths, so trading one-for-one with double-melees will rack up points while scattering your own deaths (more or less) among the other players.
  • Most Pit Objective gametypes (King Of The Hill, Oddball, etc.) also usually increase your kill-count, since they concentrate combat into small zones, making it easier to spam grenades, death-blossom your Assault Rifle or pickpocket kills from a gunbattle between other players.
  • However, skip Juggernaut — a low-kill-count option that can leave you with no kills at all.
  • For a change of pace, head into Multiteam or the Team Slayer playlists (Slayer, Swat, Snipers). Avoid Team Objective, since games usually take longer and generate fewer kills.
SINGLE WIELD

Multiplayer

Special Weapon

Kills

Type: Kills
Setting: Multiplayer
Difficulty: Grind
Reward: 1250

Earn 30 kills with small arms weapons in Multiplayer Matchmaking.

We’ve all got ’em, and we don’t use ’em nearly enough. No, I’m not talking about your private parts (Get a grip. heh.); I’m talking about the secondary weapons that most of us ignore unless we’ve got no choice, even though they can be a damn sight more reliable than a DMR’s bloomin’ reticule.

In fact, running around with nothing but a Magnum and Plasma Pistol can make you the least popular player in the Rumble Pit; the Magnum, though its clip is smaller, has one the best headshot rates-of-fire in the game — way faster than a DMR — so you can snap off an instant-kill once an opponent’s shields are down with alarmingly lethal speed.

The Magnum’s effective range is somewhat lacking, however, so we recommend looking for smaller maps, though open enough that you’ve still got a decent line of sight and aren’t forced into a fistfight to finish off an enemy (your melees don’t count as “small arms”, no matter what the size your arms are). Most of the Rumble Pit maps will do, though an Invasion map like Boneyard will work well enough too during the first phase, when combat is confined to the self-contained opening section.

Depending on your headshot talent, however, your best bet may be SWAT, where opponents don’t carry Shields and the playlist even features Magnum-exclusive gametypes. You won’t have any Shields either, however, so unless you’re fast on the draw and strong at evading while under fire, you might actually make more rapid progress in a standard gametype, hunting down a Plasma Pistol and using the much-beloved N00b combo to register kills — it’s all a question of your personal skills.

UPDATE: Here’s a great tip from reader Dukemeiser: Load up Living Dead, where you can rock your Magnum against unshielded opponents until the World As We Know It ends. HRD would still point out a few drawbacks: You won’t always start as a Spartan; and you’ll be playing Living Dead. But both the games and the kills are quick, so try it out.

VENGEANCE FOUND

Multiplayer

Kill

Type: Kill (Special)
Setting: Multiplayer
Difficulty: Easy
Reward: 1150

Earn your ‘Revenge’ in a Multiplayer Matchmaking game.

Yep, it really is as simple as it sounds. Head into a small-squad Slayer match (Team, SWAT, Snipers, etc.) since fewer enemies means it’s more likely you’ll hunt down your killer. Score a Revenge Medal and you’ll get 700 bonus cRedits for your stylish teabag. (Well, you’ll get the cRedits whether you teabag or not; but it’s Revenge, yah?)

FIVE-TIME CHAMP

Multiplayer

Win

Type: Wins
Setting: Multiplayer
Difficulty: Grind
Reward: 2750

Win 5 games in Multiplayer Matchmaking.

Not much to say here; play enough games and you’ll rack up five wins.

Tip Of The Day

However, take note: Despite what it may say on your Reach game stats page over at Bungie.net, simply finishing in the top half of a Rumble Pit game will NOT register as a win for your Challenge progress here — you’ll need to place First, or not at all. (Yes, it’s an annoying inconsistency from Bungie; like that’s never happened before.) Also note: Avoid any Team Objective gametype that frequently ends in a tie — Capture The Flag and Assault, for example — since although your game score counts it as a win for both sides, the Daily Challenge does NOT. (Yes, it’s an annoying inconsistency from Bungie; like that’s– ah, never mind.)

Both of these glitches mean that Team Slayer games become your best option:

  • Avoid Big Team Battle and Invasion; though generally worth more cRedits, they also take longer, and you’re targeting wins here, not just cR. Plus, you can spend twice as much time in a Big Team game and still have a 50% chance of finishing without any Challenge progress; two smaller-squad games will earn just as many credits in the same time, but double your chances at a win.
  • If you’re a weaker player, you can still play a support role to earn the Challenge. Stick by at least one of your comrades to help him team-shoot, watching his back and providing cover fire. Play defensively, helping allies with assists rather than charging in for a big kill; finishing with a low score but only a few deaths is far more important than letting the other team run up their number by stacking your corpses.

WEEKLY CHALLENGE

ALL IN A WEEK’S WORK

Multiplayer

Kills

Type: Kills
Setting: Multiplayer
Difficulty: Grind
Reward: 7777

Kill 1000 enemies in Multiplayer Matchmaking this week.

Ahh, finally, another Weekly Challenge that’s actually a challenge. Scoring 1K kills in one week sounds like an insurmountable task for which there are no shortcuts, but only the second half of that is right.

The number seems like a towering monolith, conquerable only by the truly skilled or truly crazed. But, with all week to run your counter up, it becomes implausible only if you leave it to the very end.

One thousand divides not-so-neatly into 143 kills per day — an eminently manageable number, considering you’ve already completed Daily Challenges that required you to register up to 150 names in the dead-book. Notching that once per day simply turns this into a fifth Daily Challenge, with the massive payoff for all seven days at the end of the week.

Also: Though we don’t know what they are yet, several upcoming Challenges — like today’s More Than A Handful and Single Wield — will likely require you to stack Multiplayer bodies, so you’ll work this one automatically as you wrap up the Dailies during the week.

Most importantly, however, don’t talk yourself out of this simply because it’s intimidating; with the Bungie-sized bonus at the end of the week, each kill will net you an additional 7.7 cRedits; considering that a standard kill only awards you 4 cR, you’ll be nearly tripling your cRedit reward for your next thousand kills — but only if you finish. You’re a Spartan, okay? “Impossible” is a word for ODSTs.

Check in here for strategies on completing the Daily and Weekly challenges in Halo: Reach. If it’s your first time, click through the About HRD link above; and add comments below if you’ve got a good idea of your own for tackling the Challenges today.

NOTE: NEW WEEKLY CHALLENGE TODAY!

DAILY CHALLENGES

SHOOTIN’ AND LOOTIN’

Any Game Mode

Kills

Type: Kills
Setting: Any
Difficulty: Easy
Reward: 1500

Kill 150 enemies in any game mode in Reach.

Take this on last, and you probably won’t need to pay attention to it at all; you’ll almost certainly blow right past 150 while wrapping up the Dailies and Weekly (which you can easily do today as well), so there’s no point repeating your efforts.

If you still have a handful of stragglers — which would be an accomplishment by itself — basic Matchmaking is likely all you’ll need, though you can just as easily load up ONI Sword Base for some Target Locating or a Custom Game to Grunt your way through them. Check out the Owning On ONI or Grunt Game Settings standing links at the top of the page for instructions.

COVENANT-CIDE

Firefight

Kills

Type: Kills
Setting: Firefight
Difficulty: Easy
Reward: 500

Kill 60 enemies in Firefight Matchmaking.

Not much to say: You’ll pocket this simply by tackling the Heroic Killagruntjaro! Challenge (see below) at the same time.

HEROIC KILLAGRUNTJARO!

Firefight

Single Match

Multikill

Type: Multikills
Setting: Firefight
Difficulty: Medium
Reward: 3500

Earn 35 multikills in a Firefight Matchmaking game on Heroic or harder.

(Question: How is this different from the standard Killagruntjaro! Challenge from four days ago? Just askin’.)

Despite what the title of this Challenge might say, Gruntpocalypse is not your best path to cRedit glory, and actually requires a fair bit of tactical planning and strategic gunplay. You need to score all 35 Multikills in a single match; only 120 Grunts ever appear during a one-Round Score Attack, and they have an inconvenient habit of killing themselves, each other, or both.

That means, even under the best conditions, you’d need to dispatch either 70 Grunts within a trigger-pull of each other, or start scrambling to make up lost Multikills by scoring Triples, Overkills and precisely-timed grenade throws; otherwise, you might find yourself mathematically eliminated before the final Wave waddles past. It’s certainly possible, especially if you’re a skilled Gruntinator, but you don’t get any gold stars for making your life more difficult.

Instead, head into Rocketfight — with now three Rounds of missile mayhem, you should be able to blast your way through 35 Multikills with some reasonable trigger discipline. There’s a lot to go over, however, but you’ll also be able to work two other Challenges (Shootin’ And Lootin’ and Covenant-cide) at the same time, so pull up a seat.

First, a quick NOTE: Unlike some other Challenges, chaining Multikills together here WILL register multiple points on your Challenge meter. The coding counts Medals, not actual kills; so, while a previous Overkill didn’t register a second Double-Kill Medal — and thus counted as only one point for the DK Challenge — this Challenge registers ANY Multikill. That means a Double-Kill that stacks into a Triple and eventually an Overkill nets you three Challenge points, not just one.

    For Those About To Rocket...

  • Select Jetpack as your Armor Ability, then hover above the Dropships as they unload. Rain death from above, concentrating your fire on the weakest enemies — remember, you’re going for Multikills here, not single-enemy points, so the more Grunts and Jackals the better; whatever Firefight points you lose by skipping the big-ticket enemies will be more than made up by the Multikill chain bonus and Challenge cRedits. Both sets of enemies also drop in packs, priming them even more as multiple-Multikill targets.
  • As soon as you’ve emptied both chambers, toss both your grenades along the perimeter of your blasts to clean up any stray Covies who escaped their Great Journey. And don’t worry if you freefall into the middle of the survivors en route to your own quick death: you’ve just scored major Challenge points, and you were going to need to reload anyway.
  • Once you respawn, scan for a good secondary weapon to defend occasionally, since you’ll want to save your big barrels for Double-Kill targets. A Fuel Rod Gun will be your top choice, since you can fall back on it for some follow-up mayhem if you misfire a Rockets or have more enemies on hand who won’t wait for a reload. Just don’t go blast-happy, since its primary role remains defense.
  • Ignore straggler enemies and focus only on those in pairs or more; and when you do cut loose, empty both rockets and follow up with every grenade. You’ll likely catch a few extra kills, and better safe than sorry.

    Anti-Douchebag Ordinance.

Sounds pretty simple, right? Well, not exactly. Remember that you’ll be playing with three other teammates (no, we won’t call them “allies”) and they’ll be trying to do the exact same thing as you, so make sure your rockets don’t show up late to the party. If you do have trouble striking first — or, if you’re stuck with a douchbag player who insists on beating everyone to the punch well past his Challenge completion — just go in with one or more friends. You’ll want to coordinate your efforts between the Waves and Dropships, but there’ll be more than enough Multikills to go around.

  • Your Challenge meter will flash periodic reminders of your total, but you’ll want to keep track yourself of your running average, not just when you hit a progress mark. With three Rounds of five Waves each, you would otherwise need to pace yourself at three Medals per Wave; but remember, the Boss Wave that ends each Round sends out badass motherfuckers who can shake off two Rockets to the face and still pwn you into respawn; so don’t count on them to pad your Challenge-count.
  • Also don’t rely on the Bonus Wave to recover any slack — not only is it your last gasp after toughing it out for three Rounds, but your enemies will be Elites, and they don’t go down easy. You’ll likely score some solid kills, but not likely to score any Doubles; plus, you’ll have the Iron Skull on, which means lose-and-go-home. Not exactly where you want to be after 30 minutes of reloading.
  • Instead, rely only on the first four Waves, which divides not-so-evenly into just over four Medals per Wave. (You’ll need to notch a single extra one somewhere along the line.) But, of course, your best strategy will be to notch them as early as possible — so keep the pressure on.

WEEKLY CHALLENGE

CRACKSHOT

Campaign

Headshot

Special Weapon

Type: Special Weapon / Killstyle
Setting: Campaign
Difficulty: Grind
Reward: 3000

Kill 70 enemies with Sniper Rifle Headshots in Nightfall on Heroic.

Another so-easy-Justin-Bieber-could-do-it Challenge. Nightfall‘s a particularly easy level for this: it’s dark, you start with a Sniper, and you’re on a hill overlooking unsuspecting Covies — the only way Bungie could make it easier is if the Elites actively lunged into your bullets with their foreheads.

Just flip on Night Vision, take aim, and fire away. You can even skip the opening assassination of the Elite taking a leak on the Grunts below, and just headshot him from behind. (OK, so, maybe he’s not actually taking a leak; but then, what the hell is he doing there?)

When you’re done with the first Elite and two Grunts, advance to the cliff overlooking the makeshift Covenant base. Start picking off Covies until you run out of ammo or run out of enemies; then you can simply restart the level and repeat, until the Challenge Complete banner flashes onscreen.

Easy, yeah? Well, at least it’s a chance to use Sniper rounds on some Grunts without feeling retarded about it.

Tip Of The Day

TAKE NOTE, however: Though you can die as many times as you like, restart the mission or simply revert to Checkpoint, you CAN’T Save and Quit and then return at a later time; your Challenge counter will reset, and you’ll have to start over again. That means you’ll have to set aside a couple of extra minutes to register all 70 in one go.
