The Midnight Run

In previous Halos, players could switch on special Skull settings to make Campaign levels more difficult, or interesting, or both. The fine folks at Bungie have taken a cue from this to add Campaign completions into the Challenges, with different Skulls active to mix things up a bit.

Guess what? Thanks to the ingenuity of the Halo community, they hardly make a difference.

One of the earliest level-killers discovered for Reach — developed by the jacket-strapped lunatics who invented Mythic Difficulty, a zero-death solo option on Legendary with all Skulls on — is the Midnight Run on Nightfall.

Never done the Midnight Run? Oh, you’re gonna love this.

The Midnight Run lets you race along the mission’s perimeter, bolting past the main encounters so that you’re already just a cloud of dust by the time the Covies have strapped on their boots.

  • After assassinating the initial Elite at the opening of the mission, you’ll Sprint your way through almost the entire level, skirting the edge of the map, meleeing an occasional Grunt and Jackal as you go with only a small amount of gunfire combat when you reach the bridge to Powerhouse.
  • There’s a GEEEnius maneuver you’ll pull off with the forklift (yes, the forklift!), and you won’t even encounter the Hunters at all. The changes to gameplay from the Skull effects will hardly figure in, since you’ll spend most of the level along the outskirts, running at a full clip.
  • Here’s a video of the complete route — the guy in it wraps up the level in five minutes, but even if Forky doesn’t immediately cooperate, you should still finish it in under ten.
